Donavan Clary is the only full-time fly-fishing guide in Oklahoma. He also guides in Missouri and Arkansas. He has been fly fishing since 1982. Spending an average of 225 days a year fishing it's easy to say he's committed! He is a volunteer with the Tulsa chapter of PHWFF and has been for a number of years. He also supports and volunteers with KEKOA Outdoors, another nonprofit focused on exposing veterans to fishing and hunting. He is an avid supporter of Trout Unlimited, and very active with the local 420 chapter. His family owns and operates a lodge on Tenkiller Lake where they offer all-inclusive guide trips for individuals and groups. He loves Oklahoma and the Illinois River. The majority of his time is spent guiding float trips and wading trips above and below lake Tenkiller. He will even take occasional trips on the lake with anglers ready to chase still water bass on the fly. He is a master at finding and catching large trout, striper, carp, gar, and smallmouth bass on the fly. He enjoys both recreational and competitive fly fishing. He is the 2017 carp on the fly world champion. He dominated the Texas State fly Carpers United championship in 2018 and also won both the Cowtown Carp Classic in Fort Worth and the Texas Carpnado Fly Fishing Tournament in 2018. He is the only three-time winner of the annual Blue River (Oklahoma) Fly Fishing Classic held every March near Tishomingo, OK. His fascination for carp and obsession with catching them has helped him accel in all forms of fly fishing. He holds seminars and speaking engagements throughout the year over popular Euro nymphing techniques for trout, small-mouth fishing on the fly, and fly-fishing 101/102.
His main focus in the summer months is smallmouth bass and carp on the fly. During the winter months, he spends time in Missouri guiding and teaching all aspects of fly fishing. While his first love is the fly rod, he also gladly accepts conventional gear anglers. He hosts the annual Blue river fishing 101 events in the winter and Blue River smallmouth clinics in the summer.
In 2019 he organized the annual and very popular Illinois River Rendezvous. A workshop/expo focused on the Illinois River and all the fishing opportunities it offers. The event promotes other local professional guides and outfitters, businesses, and vendors.

The American Sportsman, hosted by Curt Gowdy, was a long-running TV series that aired on ABC every Sunday afternoon. Stephen Ruiz watched every episode, especially those that featured fly fishing. Ruiz saved his money and purchased his first fly fishing outfit – a cheap fly rod and reel combo – when he was 13 years old. Fly fishing for warm water species in farm ponds, creeks, rivers, and lakes in southeast Oklahoma became Stephen’s passion. However, 7 years ago he caught his first trout on the Uncompahgre river near Ridgway, Colorado. Stephen was hooked (literally) by the technical complexity of trout fishing. Since then, Ruiz has immersed himself in the quest to demystify the art and craft of fly fishing.
Ruiz is a graduate of the Sweetwater Guide School and makes his home in Edmond, Oklahoma with his wife, Sarah, his “bonus daughter,” Parker, and his pup, Buddy.
