Donavan Clary guides in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas. He has been fly fishing since 1982. Spending an average of 225 days a year fishing it's easy to say he's committed! He is a volunteer with the Tulsa chapter of PHWFF and has been for a number of years. He also supports and volunteers with KEKOA Outdoors, another nonprofit focused on exposing veterans to fishing and hunting. He is an avid supporter of Trout Unlimited, and very active with the local 420 chapter. His family owns and operates a lodge on Tenkiller Lake where they offer all-inclusive guide trips for individuals and groups. He loves Oklahoma and the Illinois River. The majority of his time is spent guiding float trips and wading trips above and below Tenkiller Lake. He will even take occasional trips on the lake with anglers ready to chase still water bass on the fly. He is a master at finding and catching large trout, striper, carp, gar, and smallmouth bass on the fly.
The American Sportsman, hosted by Curt Gowdy, was a long-running TV series that aired on ABC every Sunday afternoon. Stephen Ruiz watched every episode, especially those that featured fly fishing. Ruiz saved his money and purchased his first fly fishing outfit – a cheap fly rod and reel combo – when he was 13 years old. Fly fishing for warm water species in farm ponds, creeks, rivers, and lakes in southeast Oklahoma became Stephen’s passion. However, 7 years ago he caught his first trout on the Uncompahgre river near Ridgway, Colorado. Stephen was hooked (literally) by the technical complexity of trout fishing. Since then, Ruiz has immersed himself in the quest to demystify the art and craft of fly fishing.
Ruiz is a graduate of the Sweetwater Guide School and makes his home in Edmond, Oklahoma with his wife, Sarah, his “bonus daughter,” Parker, and his pup, Buddy.
Larry Clark owns On The Flyfishing Guide Service and has been guiding since the early 90’s and is a graduate of Sweetwater Guide School in Montana. Larry is the founding president of three different Flyfishing Clubs and also served on both the Oklahoma and Arkansas Scenic Rivers Commissions. I think I can assuredly say that I am the Grandfather of fly fishing for Smallmouth Bass on the Upper Illinois River! A faithful follower of Dave Whitlock and Duane Hada in the Ozark ways of the Smallmouth Bass! In the past I have taught classes on Flyfishing and Flytying for NSU Tahlequah and others. I have ruined the lives of many!
Semi-retired I now live in South East Oklahoma and still guide on a couple of Forest Service lakes and local waters for Largemouth Smallmouth Sunfish and all other warm species. I often guide on the Upper Illinois River for Smallmouth Bass as well as still do some guiding for Trout. Come join me for some exciting Flyfishing or Spin Fishing in some of the most quite and beautiful small waters in Oklahoma and Arkansas!
